It’s not nearly as clean as Mazda616’s Jolene. It is however very cheap and a convertible.

Neat!

Wait, Columbus?

Sseriously. I owned a J-body. That thing is nothing but rust under the paint.

Looks to be in decent shape, but I’m a little alarmed by the engine replacement. And lemme guess- there’s rust hiding behind those chrome flares, isn’t there.

some one should make little nipple hats for people to wear when they are driving a convertible with the top off.

its a niche market sure, but some one will buy them.

There’s about a 100% chance that it’s a rustbucket, but hey, it’s one of those rare RWD Sunbirds!!

For $800, though, why not?

I have zero doubt the flares were added to cover rust bubbles that have since bloomed into full blown rot.

Can I get a pierced tiddy hat? It seems appropriate to an old Sunbird.

Nah, I’ll just look for a Pall Mall scented air freshener.

But the convertible has a 500% increase in cowl shake. Hell who am I kidding; this thing probably has enough rust in the structure to increase it by 900%.

Top is wrecked, looks to have rot in the doors, CP.

It’s a 3100, I wouldn’t be alarmed. They seemed to be very hit or miss. Some went 200k+ without issue, others blew up around 100k.

I’d be more concerned with the tore up top and the rotted doors.

Yeah I just get nervous when a car’s undergone a repair that big. Lots of potential for something to have gone wrong, like a cracked sensor, crossthreaded or under/over-torqued fastener, pinched wiring harness, or some other gremlin that won’t be immediately apparent. Repairs might have been performed by a mechanic who was rushed, or inexperienced, or sloppy... you just never really know. Sometimes I’d just rather have to replace a few worn-o ut factory components myself, just to get the peace-of-mind that the rest of the car is unmolested.

After the things I’ve seen with basic repairs, I figure if it’s still running they must have done something right. https://oppositelock.kinja.com/reasons-i-do-all-my-own-work-1830940396

Swapping an engine/transmission on these older cars is really no harder than fixing suspension or brakes, which can actually kill you if a mechanic messes those up. I swapped my van’s drivetrain in under a day ( probably could have made about 4 hrs if I had a hoist ) , including swapping all the wiring, it was a cake walk compared to other repairs I’ve done.
